I’m Brandon, a freelance writer.

I grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. Although Battle Creek is a small city, it's been the home of the Kellogg Company for more than a century and was the birthplace breakfast cereal. I thought it was normal for the air to smell like cereal, and my friends and I would always try to guess what the factory was making when we were on the playground. I'm certain my interest in food began with where I'm from.

 

I started writing on a regular basis in college for the Michigan Daily in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I attended the University of Michigan. I earned my BA in English Language and Literature with honors as well as a minor in philosophy in 2017.
 

After graduation I moved to New York City to study food and restaurant culture, and graduated top of my class from the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE). After receiving my diploma in culinary arts, I worked at Blue Hill at Stone Barns — a Michelin two star and top ten World’s 50 Best restaurant. I spent time in the kitchen, in the dining room, and volunteering on the farm.

Since then, I've lived in Houston and now live in Chicago. My work has appeared in Eater, Epicurious, VinePair, Wine Enthusiast, and elsewhere.

When I'm not writing I'm often wrist-deep in pastry dough, bottling home brewed beer, or tending my garden. I love riding my vintage Schwinn Continental bicycle and rarely turn down meeting friends at Montrose Beach. My favorite summertime routine is going to the Logan Square farmers market, buying lots of cheese and tomatoes, and getting ice cream afterwards.

In a past life my family owned a bakery. I still have a horrible sweet tooth.
